This is a great article that unflinchingly speaks truth to power. It is so important that people make the connection between the oppression of women and the patriarchal, male-supremacist religious fundamentalist right wing, a tool of the ruling plutocrats.

The editorial staff at the Week’s examination of the GOP’s poor showing in the 2012 elections is rather superficial because the Republicans don’t need a face lift, they need a heart transplant. Their bone-deep misogyny and pandering to the radical religious right needs to to be excised and exorcised if they want to have any hope of appealing to anyone other than the lunatic fundamentalist fringe. Their “woman problem” (more accurately woman-hating problem) is their worst failing and should have been first on this writer’s list.
Romney signed his own political death warrant when he named blatant misogynist Paul Ryan as his running mate and continued to support Todd Akin and Richard Mourdock and didn’t denounce them and Joe Walsh for the idiots they are when they made their ill-informed and outrageous remarks about rape, rape-induced pregnancy, and abortion.
The article in Reuters outlines the real reason Obama and so many other pro-choice Democrats, especially women, won: women voters refusal to accept the war on women unleashed by the Tea Party Republicans. The defeat of Romney/Ryan, Todd Akin, Richard Mourdock, Joe Walsh, and the rabid Allen West and the election of pro-choice women like Elizabeth Warren, Tammy Baldwin, Heidi Heitkamp, Kirsten Gillibrand, Maria Cantwell, Tammy Duckworth, Dianne Feinstein, Carol Shea-Porter, Mazie Hirono, and Annie Kuster to the Senate for the first-time ever total of 19 pro-choice women (!) is abundant proof of this.
This is an outrage and is severe psychological and emotional child abuse to terrorize and brainwash young children with such repugnant ideology. It is important to point out that while Jesus taught and practiced kindness, love, and compassion, he was a departure from the Old Testament patriarchal god of wrath who was more than ok with genocide and in fact demanded it regularly towards the Mesopotamian peoples who practiced goddess worship. The case of Jezebel and her people is instructive. This is why the radical religious rightwing are so hellbent in their persecution of women and people who believe differently than they do. These hatemongers who preach this vile swill now have representatives in the highest court and every branch and level of government. It is past time to wake up to the danger fundamentalist “Christian” extremism poses to this country and to the world. We MUST get religion out of politics and our schools!
Something I have observed recently is that some Occupy groups, though very aware of the tendency of the Democrats and Unions to try to co-opt the movement, there is less awareness of the co-opting of a much more dangerous variety: The Radical Religious Right.
The religious right, or the fundamentalist fascists, have an anti-human rights agenda. There are almost NO churches that are really supportive of true freedom and democracy, especially for women or gay people, and the religious right are in many ways more of a threat than the 1%. They are the linchpin that keeps the whole patriarchal domination system in power and they have not only taken over the Republican Party, but have now taken over the Tea Party (which was not as extreme prior to this) who are in turn, now controlling the Republican Party and running our government because of their terrorist tactics (and the enabling complicity and cowardice of the Democrats). To allow them ANY space in the Occupy movement is suicidal, and if naïve people in OWS act on the belief that they deserve a voice in it, because they are “part of the 99%,” it is a serious mistake.
The Christian fundamentalists have already had an immense influence on our political system and would completely fuse church and state if allowed to do so. Not only have they indoctrinated the minds of the churchgoing public, but have managed to normalize many of their extremist beliefs by buying up all the radio and TV stations they have, allowing them to propagate their extremist agenda to a wide audience. They would likewise love to infiltrate and sabotage the Occupy movement, even more than they already indirectly have by the people involved who buy into this belief system to one extent or another, and their lack of awareness of the danger this virulent group represents to every freedom they are trying to defend. Though they are waking up to other issues, they do not seem to be aware of this one, due largely to their motive to be inclusive and tolerant, but also because it is such a part of the zeitgeist that it goes undetected. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. Steven Biko’s quote applies so perfectly, “The most powerful weapon in the hands of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed”. We need to guard against the influence of the RRR in the movement and remove religion from politics and government once and for all.
The Stupak Amendment to the health care reform bill, passed by the House, trades away women’s health for a few votes from the religious right as it prohibits women from even PAYING for reproductive services such as
abortion. The ongoing attempts of the radical right to deny women reproductive freedom know no bounds. Women are second-class citizens to these people who think a woman has less right to life than an embryo, borne out by their staunch opposition to abortion, even in the case of health risks and life of the mother, and by their ongoing violence at family planning clinics and towards doctors who perform abortions. The doctors, nurses, and staff at Planned Parenthood get harassed, intimidated, and even issued death threats on a daily basis from these people who so clearly have no respect for life; they are religious terrorists, every bit as much as their Muslim fundamentalist counterparts, and deserve to be treated as such. We MUST stop the violence and ensure the safety of these caring and courageous people that work in the clinics, as well as the patients seeking care, and we must stop the incursions of the radical religious right into positions of power in the government who make these kinds of outrageous decisions and who would return women to being chattel and force them into endless childbearing.
